Happy New Year

We hope you are surviving the snow and looking forward to Bearded Theory 2013.

Planning is well underway for our sixth festival and tickets are selling extremely well. We only have a handful of Campervan passes left, so be quick.  This year’s theme is all things Australian welcoming The Beards who perform in Tornado Town on Sunday. The children’s area will be bigger and better than before, we have improved the stages, have more walkabouts, comedy, cabaret, Thornbridge Brewery and excellent world foods.

It has taken many months to finalise but we are finally delighted and somewhat exhausted to announce that punk rock band STIFF LITTLE FINGERS join Sunday’s line up.  Formally from Belfast but now residing in the States we will be flying the band in from America for a 2013 festival exclusive. Hotly tipped nu- folk band the HUMMING BIRDS join Friday’s line up following their 2013 Mercury Prize nomination and bizarrely being name checked as Wayne Rooney’s favourite band.

The Lock Inn (Fourth Stage) is coming on very well and will be an electric blend of comedy, cabaret, theatre, film and music.

Will Kaufman presents WOODY GUTHRIE: HARD TIMES AND HARD TRAVELIN’ a captivating “live documentary” will feature  set the songs of Woody Guthrie in the context of the American 1930s – the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music itself showcasing each day of the festival climaxing on Sunday with Freedom Songs. This is a highly acclaimed performance by Will Kaufman who has featured with Pete Seeger and won awards for his work.

Friday kicks off with  Left Hand Drive, Drop Bear and resident DJ Bayer will be staging a rock disco. The Saturday menu will be all things Skiffle headlined by Peter Donegan, the son of legend Lonnie Donegan. Joining them will be Lock Inn hosts Please Y` Self with, Jive Aces, Police Dog Hogan, Shanks Pony, Red Ruff and Keith Manuel’s Uke Jam Session where any ukulele players can come along and participate and later join Please Y` Self and Peter Donegan on stage in their closing performance.  Sunday’s bill includes Lucy Ward, Pete Jackson, Frayed Knott and a reggae DJ session.

The late night comedy and cabaret line up is still being worked on and we should be releasing this along with the remaining bands next month but you will be pleased to know that Jolly Jock will be returning.  Over the weekend St Johns Theatre Group from Wirksworth will be staging 45 minute plays during bands and we will be showcasing a local film about record shop closures.

The Something Else Tea Tent hosted by Madame Gail has announced their 2013 line up featuring Beanfeast Banjos featuring Doozer & members of Ferocious Dog, Clayton Blizzard, Shootin` the Crow and Muddy Summers & the DFWs.  The tent will of course feature open mic sessions where anyone can plonk their name down and get up on stage to entertain the masses.
